Why a dogecoin payout costs what it does
Dogecoin is a UTXO chain descended from litecoin, with a block every minute. Its fee is set per kilobyte rather than per virtual byte, and Dogecoin Core has recommended 0.01 DOGE per kilobyte since 2021, when its developers cut fees to keep small payments practical. A typical payout costs the sender a few hundredths of a DOGE, and nodes refuse outputs below a small dust threshold.
Because DOGE is priced in cents, a flat fee of a few whole DOGE is small in dollars and large in proportion on a small swap, which is where it bites. The spread in the rows is wide for the same reason as on litecoin: the chain’s cost is nearly the same for every sender, so what differs is pricing. Compare the share of the swap in the worked example, not the headline fee.
Before you receive dogecoin
- Dogecoin addresses start with D. Most start with a capital D; multisig addresses start with A or 9. A DOGE token on another chain is a different asset.
- Mind the share of a small swap. The worked example shows the flat fee as a percentage at three sizes.
- Very small amounts can be dust. Nodes refuse tiny outputs, so an exchange sets a minimum payout.

How much does it cost to send dogecoin on chain?
Dogecoin Core has recommended 0.01 DOGE per kilobyte since 2021, so a simple payout costs a few hundredths of a DOGE.
Why are exchange DOGE withdrawal fees so much higher than the network fee?
The chain’s cost is tiny for everyone, so a larger flat fee is the exchange’s own pricing. Each one on this page is labelled.
Is a DOGE fee a big deal on a small swap?
It can be. A fee of a few DOGE is a noticeable share of a swap worth a few tens of dollars; the worked example shows how much.
