Why sending USDT on Arbitrum costs less than on Ethereum
An Arbitrum transaction pays for two things: the computation on Arbitrum itself, which is cheap because the rollup has plenty of capacity, and a share of the cost of posting its data back to Ethereum. Since Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade in March 2024 that data travels in blobs, a cheaper kind of space, and rollup fees fell sharply. A token transfer on Arbitrum One now usually costs the sender a few cents or less, paid in ETH.
The fee still moves: when Ethereum itself is busy, the data share rises. But the gap to mainnet is wide enough that a large flat fee on an Arbitrum payout is mostly the exchange’s own charge. USDC on Arbitrum and ETH on Arbitrum use the same fee mechanics, so their rows are shown here in a second table rather than on separate pages. Where an exchange’s quotes showed no separate fee on this chain, its row says so.

Before you receive USDT on Arbitrum
- Arbitrum One, not Arbitrum Nova. They are two different chains that share an address format. Most exchanges and wallets mean Arbitrum One.
- Your address is also an Ethereum address. Choose Arbitrum on the receiving side. A payout on the wrong chain lands on a different ledger, and some exchanges cannot credit it.
- You will need a little ETH on Arbitrum to move the coins on. Gas on Arbitrum is paid in ETH held on Arbitrum, not on Ethereum.
Arbitrum fee questions
Why is USDT on Arbitrum cheaper to receive than USDT on Ethereum?
Arbitrum executes the transfer on a rollup and posts only compressed data to Ethereum, so the sender’s gas cost is a small fraction of a mainnet token transfer.
Is USDT on Arbitrum the same token as on Ethereum?
It represents the same dollar, but it lives on Arbitrum. To use it on Ethereum it has to be bridged or swapped.
Does ETH on Arbitrum have its own fee here?
Yes, in the second table on this page. It follows the same rollup fee mechanics as USDT and USDC on Arbitrum.
