TRX and USDT move on the same chain but pay for it differently. A USDT transfer runs a contract and spends energy; a plain TRX transfer spends only bandwidth, which is far cheaper. So the TRX page and the USDT-on-Tron page tell different stories about the same network.

Why sending TRX costs what it does: bandwidth, and a new-account fee
A native TRX transfer uses no energy, only bandwidth: a few hundred bandwidth points for an ordinary payment. Every Tron account gets a small free bandwidth allowance each day, and an account that has used it up, or holds none from staking, burns a few tenths of a TRX instead. For an exchange sending many payouts, bandwidth is a real but modest cost.
The larger cost is a new recipient. A Tron address does not exist on chain until it first receives something, and the transfer that activates it carries a one-off account-creation fee of about 1 TRX, paid by the sender. An exchange cannot know in advance whether your address is new, so a TRX fee in the region of one TRX is often that activation priced in. None of this applies to USDT’s energy cost, which has its own page.
Before you receive TRX
- A brand-new address is activated by its first payout. The sender pays the activation. Your address works for USDT on Tron afterwards too.
- TRX on Tron, not TRX as a token elsewhere. Some exchanges list wrapped TRX on other chains. Choose the Tron network.
- Holding some TRX helps later. Staking TRX gives your own account bandwidth and energy for sending, which is how heavy Tron users avoid burning fees.
TRX fee questions
Why does a TRX withdrawal cost more than the bandwidth it uses?
Often because of account activation: the first transfer to a new Tron address carries a one-off fee of about 1 TRX, and exchanges price for that case.
Is sending TRX cheaper than sending USDT on Tron?
On chain, yes. TRX spends bandwidth only; USDT runs a contract and spends energy, which costs much more unless the sender has staked or rented it.
Do I pay anything to receive TRX?
No. Receiving is free, and the sender covers any activation cost for a new address.
