Why sending SOL costs almost nothing on chain
A SOL transfer pays a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, which is 0.000005 SOL, and an optional priority fee that buys a place in a busy block. Unlike a token payout, sending native SOL needs no token account, so there is no rent to fund when the recipient already exists.
There is one catch for a brand-new wallet. A Solana account must hold at least a rent-exempt minimum of about 0.00089 SOL, so the first payout to an empty address has to be at least that large or the network rejects it. That sets a floor on tiny SOL payouts, not a fee. Before you receive SOL
- A fresh wallet must receive at least the rent-exempt minimum. Below that minimum, given in the questions further down, the first transfer to an empty address fails.
- Solana addresses are base58, 32 to 44 characters. They never start with 0x. If yours does, it is an address for a different chain.
- Keep a little SOL for later transactions. Every Solana transaction you send pays its fee in SOL, including moving tokens.

Why can a very small SOL payout fail?
A new Solana account must hold at least the rent-exempt minimum, about 0.00089 SOL. A first payout below that to an empty address is rejected.
Is sending SOL cheaper than sending USDT on Solana?
On chain, yes: native SOL needs no token account, so there is no 0.00203928 SOL rent to fund for a new recipient.
