USDT on BNB Smart Chain but no BNB for gas? How to get it moving

A USDT transfer on BNB Smart Chain is paid for in BNB, and an address with none cannot send at all. Why, how little BNB you need, the network mix-up that loses people money, and three ways to get BNB onto that address.

Your wallet shows USDT on BNB Smart Chain, you press send, and it stops you: insufficient BNB for gas. The USDT is fine. It cannot move until the same address holds a little BNB.

Why a USDT transfer needs BNB

USDT on BNB Smart Chain (often labelled BEP-20) is a token contract. Every transaction on the chain, a token transfer included, pays its network fee, called gas, in the chain’s own coin: BNB. There is no free allowance. With zero BNB the wallet cannot pay any fee at all, however small, so the transfer is never sent.

Sending less USDT does not help. The fee is charged in BNB, whatever the USDT amount.

How much BNB you need

  • Very little. A token transfer on BNB Smart Chain usually costs a few cents or less at today’s gas prices.
  • Your wallet shows the exact fee before you confirm. Gas prices change, so read that figure rather than any number you saw online.
  • A dollar or two of BNB covers many transfers. If you are buying it anyway, a little more saves you doing this again.

The mix-up that costs people money: the wrong network

BNB exists on more than one network. Exchanges and wallets may also offer opBNB, a separate network that shares the name. BNB that arrives on opBNB, or on any network other than BNB Smart Chain, does not pay gas on BNB Smart Chain. Whatever route you take, make sure the BNB is sent on BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20), to the same address that holds the USDT.

Three ways to get BNB onto your address

1. Withdraw BNB from an exchange account

If you already have an account on an exchange that lists BNB, withdraw a small amount to your address and choose BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) as the network. If the account exists, this is usually the quickest route.

2. Swap something you hold elsewhere into BNB

If your other crypto is in another wallet or on another chain (USDT on Tron, Ethereum or Solana, some ETH or BTC), swap a little of it to BNB and have the BNB delivered to the address that holds your USDT. On Cambio you do this without opening an account: you give that address, send the coin you have, and BNB on BNB Smart Chain arrives there. The quote shows how much BNB you will receive before you send anything.

3. Ask someone to send you a little BNB

Anyone with BNB on BNB Smart Chain can send you a dollar’s worth in under a minute, for a fee of about the same size as yours will be.

What does not work

  • Sending more USDT to the same address. The fee is paid in BNB, not USDT.
  • BNB on opBNB or another network. It has to be BNB on BNB Smart Chain.
  • Sending the USDT to an exchange "to get BNB back" from the same wallet. That transfer needs gas too.

Once the BNB has arrived

Send your USDT as normal: the wallet pays the gas in BNB and the transfer goes through. Some wallets now offer to take the network fee in the token you are sending; if yours does, it shows the cost before you confirm.

The same thing happens on other chains: USDT on Tron needs TRX, USDT on Solana needs SOL, and USDT on Ethereum needs ETH. The fix is always the same: get a little of that chain’s own coin onto the address first.
