USDT on Tron but no TRX for the fee? How to get your USDT moving

Sending USDT on Tron costs TRX, and an address with none cannot send at all. Why it happens, how much TRX one transfer needs, and three ways to get TRX onto that address.

You have USDT on Tron, you press send, and the wallet refuses: not enough TRX, or not enough energy. Your USDT is safe. It just cannot move until the same address holds a little TRX to pay the network.

Why a USDT transfer needs TRX

USDT on Tron is a TRC-20 token, which means every transfer runs a smart contract. That uses two network resources: bandwidth, of which every account gets a small free amount each day, and energy, of which it gets none. When an address has no energy of its own, the network takes the fee by burning TRX from that same address. With no TRX there is nothing to burn, and the transfer is refused.

So sending a smaller amount of USDT does not help. The fee is paid in TRX, whatever the USDT amount.

How much TRX one transfer needs

  • To an address that already holds USDT: about 6 to 7 TRX, measured on our own Tron transfers in 2026.
  • To an address that has never held USDT: roughly twice that, because the transfer also has to create the recipient’s USDT balance.
  • Your wallet shows the exact fee before you confirm. The network’s energy price can change, so treat these as today’s figures, not fixed ones.

For a single transfer, 20 TRX leaves a margin even in the expensive case. If you send USDT from this address often, keep more.

Three ways to get TRX onto your address

1. Withdraw TRX from an exchange account

If you already have an account on an exchange that lists TRX, withdraw a small amount of TRX straight to the Tron address that holds your USDT, and pick the Tron network on the withdrawal screen. If the account already exists, this is usually the simplest route.

2. Swap something you hold elsewhere into TRX

If your other crypto sits in another wallet or on another chain (USDT on BNB Smart Chain or Ethereum, some ETH, some BTC), swap a little of it to TRX and have the TRX delivered to the Tron address that holds your USDT. On Cambio you do this without opening an account: you give that Tron address, send the coin you have, and the TRX arrives there. The quote shows how much TRX you will receive before you send anything.

3. Ask someone to send you a few TRX

Anyone who holds TRX can send you 20 in a minute. A plain TRX transfer is cheap for the sender, much cheaper than a USDT one.

What does not work

  • Sending more USDT to the same address. The fee is paid in TRX, not USDT.
  • An energy rental service on its own. Most are paid in TRX too, so they help once you have some TRX, not before.
  • TRX on the wrong network. The TRX has to arrive on Tron, at the same address (it starts with T) that holds the USDT.

Once the TRX has arrived

Send your USDT as normal: the wallet burns TRX for the energy and the transfer goes through. Some wallets now offer to take the network fee in USDT instead; if yours does, it shows the cost before you confirm, and it is worth comparing with the TRX route.

The same problem exists on other chains. USDT on BNB Smart Chain needs BNB for its fees, and USDT on Solana needs SOL. The fix is the same: get a small amount of that chain’s own coin onto the address first.
